A few words from Alice
A few words from Alice
I’m really lucky to have such a lovely bunch of students who have helped me develop as a teacher & who make me very proud to invite anybody into my classes knowing that they will be welcomed & encouraged not only by me but by the entire class. Taking your first pole dance class can be a little daunting and your first 6 week course can be a little frustrating but the sense of achievement when you get you finally master a move you’ve been working on is just fabulous and pole dancing can be quite addictive.
Having been an ashtanga yoga teacher for many years my pole dance style has certainly been influence by my yoga and my teaching style too! I’m a stickler for training both sides of the body evenly & I just can’t stress enough the importance of using spotters to safely learn moves especially the inversions. I’m quite hands on - as I’ve learnt from the ashtanga system where you receive many adjustments from your teacher. Basically your teacher will help you into a pose you cannot currently manage on your own and this helps the body & mind to understand where they need to be & how they need to move to make the impossible - possible. And believe me there are many moves on the pole that will at first seem impossible but over time will slowly slowly become more possible.
I feel the best words to describe what I do is “Athletic Pole Dance” gymnastic style moves linked together with flow - I’m not particularly sexy, I dance barefoot not in heels & this is how it works in my classes too. I tend to stay away from the more provocative style moves although I’ll sneek one or two in when the mood takes me!
Whatever your style you can bring it to the pole, styles of dance such as ballet, salsa, hip hop... styles of music, classical, rock, pop, you name it! Put you favourite music on and just dance, its a great feeling ;-)
Early Years
Alice took dancing & swimming lessons from a very young age.
EDucation
Alice kept up the dance & swimming all the way through her school life & tried out quite a few other activities not inspired by the tradition PE/games lessons in school she spent a considerable amount of her free time on these extra curricular activities.
further EDucation
Alice studied Engineering Product Design at SouthBank University in London. Dance classes proved too expensive this is how she discovered Aerobics (60p for all you can do at Brixton Recreation Centre) and ultimately this is what caused her to give up her degree and take a completely different path.
professional EDucation
Once making that life changing decision to give up on her degree Alice quickly got her lifeguard qualification & then a job at Brockwell Lido in Brixton while she studied for the exercise to music certificate and as the summer sun faded Alice acquired a job at the prestigious Broadgate Club (who provided a first rate facility not only for their members but also for their staff allowing alice to develop & qualify in many different areas within the fitness industry) in the city of London where she stayed in various capacities till she left London to move to Bath in the summer of 2003.
Alice has always and will always be developing herself by gaining experience teaching, by personal study, by being a student by attending vourses & workshops and by gaining relevant qualifications.
All the stunning pictures on this page were taken by the brilliant Alex Cumner at Fitness First.
He will be available for occasional pole photo shoots and can be contacted through his website should you want him to take photo’s of anything else!
I can whole heartedly recommend him, he is a well mannered, easy going guy who managed to put everybody at ease which allowed him to get some great natural shots - I was pleasantly surprised to see so many pictures of us laughing!
